Helen Layfield Bradley (1900-1979)

We Met Some Sheep on the Path by the River Wyre

signed and with fly insignia (lower left), inscribed card (attached to the reverse)

watercolour and gouache

34.5 x 48.5cm.

Provenance:

The Anvil Gallery, Cumbria;

Private Collection.

The artist's card on the reverse reads:

"On Fridays in the summer at Blackpool, Grandpa took us on the little wagonette to some friends who lived on a Farm at St Michaels. We always stayed for tea, which we had in the big comfortable Farm Kitchen. It was delicious, home-baked bread and dishes of fresh warm butter, on brown bread filled with newland boiled eggs, and a big dish of grilled home-cured ham. There were apple pies and scones with homemade strawberry jam. Everyone said they had better go for a good walk before tea, so that we should be ready to do it justice. We left Grandpa behind and always walked by the side of the lovely River Wyre because we felt safe and away from the cows, but today we met some sheep. Oh dear we must not frighten them or they'll fall in the river. Mr Taylor was very good and gently turned them back into their field and the year was 1907.

Sold for £15,000
Estimated at £10,000 - £20,000

The paper has slipped in the mount revealing small pin holes to the corner where it would of bee fixed. The paper appears in very good condition with strong colours and no signs of damage of fading. Frame has some minor wear.
