17th/18th Century, carved alabaster relief of the Madonna watching over Christ, in a later 18th/19th Century gilt plaster frame, 53cm x 44.5cm
Provenance: Probably Richard Ford 1796-1858 (see label verso), English travel writer who visited Italy in 1839-40 where he began writing his most famous work 'Handbook for travellers to Spain'
Believed to be exhibited Exeter, Works of art from the Ford collection, April 1946 where it is mentioned as 'Madonna and Child, Marble Italian 17th Century', on the platform.

Note: Included in the lot is an original letter 07/03/1973 from the art historian Jennifer Montagu, THe Warburg Institute, University of London which states Dear Brinsley, I am so glad you persuaded your half brother to have his relief photographed, as it will be of the great interest to Berlin: the Virgin and Child correspond almost exactly to the central figures in their new relief, which also includes St. Joseph, apart from some minor differences in the drapery, the central figures are identical. The Monnot held by Brinsley can be seen in an image from 1992 over his left shoulder
Also included in the lot is a letter from Stefanie Walker to John Ford which asks John Ford for a photo of the relief to be included in a doctorate dated 1991.
