A 16th century Italian cedarwood cassone, dated 1596
With relief-carved and poker and penwork figural decoration, the front with depictions of hunting and combat, the interior of the lid with representations of night and day with charioteers pulling the sun and the moon across a sky set with astrological symbols, all surrounded by a foliate border.

Notable wear throughout, with signs of damage and repair. The top with patches, scratches and cracks. The loop hinges later replaced. The pen work on the front significantly faded. The base possibly later. The base is slightly loose from the body at one corner, this should not affect its usage if it remains in one place. Feet missing. Damage to the dovetails joining the front to the side. The sides with patches. The patches to the top affect the poker and penwork decoration to the interior of the lid. There is no key present and we cannot comment on the functionality of the lock.
