Provenance: Formerly the property of David Stevenson (1815-1886) MICE, FRSE, FRSSA, civil engineer and lighthouse designer, Uncle of Robert Louis Stevenson, and ancestor of our current vendor. This picture is described and illustrated in the book 'Scientific Charles Recalls a Poetic Stevenson', (see p.98) by Charles Stevenson, son of David Stevenson and first cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson, circa 1870 (the book posthumously published in 2023). A copy of this book accompanies the lot, along with a letter with franked Penny Black stamp to Messrs Stevenson & Son, dated 1840.

There are numerous pale brown spots of foxing visible to the sky (the black marks around the spire are birds). There is an area of possible corrosion? or patchy discolouration below the area where the signature is (see additional images) The signature is to the edge of a floating wooden platform on the right side. The glass is intact, and the frame appears to be the original.
