Furniture lots take centre stage at Mallams’ Country House Sale

26/02/2024

Mallams’ Country House Sales have continued to prove successful after last week’s auction. The latest Country House Sale took place on Wednesday the 21st of February at the Cheltenham saleroom and attracted many bidders online and in the room.

Lot 199 performed well, a collection of jewellery, including a silver torc bangle, a 9ct gold cased Olma wristwatch, a Tiffany & Co crucifix on chain, stamped '585', two Continental precious yellow metal keyrings, two 9ct gold charms and two white metal charms. Estimated at £320 to £380, the lot sold to an online bidder for £680.

Another success was lot 126, an early 19th-century oak and mahogany crossbanded dresser base. The lot certainly attracted attention in the lead-up to the sale. With an estimate of £300 to £500, between two telephone lines, the piece eventually sold for £1,700 to a UK telephone bidder.

Lot 72, a Burr walnut tray top tripod table, on a carved column, deemed itself a top-performing lot. With an estimate of £80 to £120, the table sold for £1,600 to a bidder in the room.

It was not just lots 126 and 72 that proved popular in the furniture category. Lot 131, a mid-18th Century Burr walnut corner cupboard, with a panel door, moulded cornice, banding and with engraved brass hinges, was also a success. With an estimate of £100 to £200, the hammer went down at £850 to an online bidder.

Lot 20, a 19th Century Gillows style mahogany desk or table, standing on brass castors stamped ‘B.S. Patent’, once again proved how popular the furniture lots were in this sale. Estimated at £150 to £350, the piece eventually sold for £1,100 to an online bidder.

Mallams director and auctioneer Robin Fisher comments: ‘The sale was a continuation of the success of Mallams’ sales from the beginning of the year and is evidence of a good, strong market at the moment.’
