George Ii Tripod Table Tops Cheltenham Sale

On a very cold week in Cheltenham, the sale of British and Continental Ceramics and Glass and Country House Furniture held over two days attracted strong interest from private and the trade, with the sale totalling £125,000.

The top price of £12,200 was for the superbly inlaid George II tripod table. The general pre-sale consensus was the table was made by German born cabinet maker Frederick Hintz. Despite a drop in the market for traditional furniture the result shows that quality, fresh to the market pieces still command top prices. Other good results from the furniture section included an unusual 19th Century mahogany chest of drawers at  £1,500 and a Heals fireside chair at £650. The second day concluded with 200 lots of Silver which were hotly contested, included in this section was a canteen of cutlery by Mappin and Webb, making £2,500.

The first day’s top lot went to a Royal Crown Derby vase, the ivory ground vase and cover painted with flowers was knocked down to a phone bidder for £3,400. Results for Meissen, Derby and Worcester showing that strong prices can be achieved when pitched at the right level. The surprise of the sale was a Victorian walking stick carved in the form of a bulldog, that soared above top estimate to make £1,100.
