A rare opportunity to own a set of ten dining chairs, attributed to the famous Victorian designer, Thomas Jeckyll will go under the hammer at auction with Mallams on 24th March.

Probably the most prolific supporter of decorative arts in London at that time, the Ionides family owned No.1 Holland Park, London.

Socialising with the highest artistic circles, their home became a showcase for the work of the top designers of the period including Rosetti, William Morris & Co, Thomas Jeckyll, Burne-Jones and G.F.Watts.

Lot 214 in Mallams House & Garden sale offers a set of ten mahogany framed chairs, circa 1880, designed as part of the refurbishment of the house which was reputedly Jeckyll’s most impressive achievement.

These chairs have not been on the open market before, having remained with family members until now.

Images of the interior of the house, which include these chairs in situ in the billiard room, can be seen in photographs by Bedford Lemere & Co in 1898 and are now housed at The V&A.

Henry Cooke, Director at Mallams said:

“We are excited to be showcasing chairs by such a reputable designer of the Art & Crafts period.  The Ionides family were renowned in London for their patronage of the arts and this set epitomises the quality and design of the period.”

The chairs will be available to view in person at our public viewing.
