Modern Art & Design Sale Generates International Interest

Modern Art & Design Sale Generates International Interest

Our Modern Art & Design sales showcase the styles and philosophies of art and design produced from post war through to modern day.

Duncan Grant (1885 – 1978), a member of the famous Bloomsbury Group, spent much of his childhood leading a somewhat nomadic lifestyle as his father was a Major in the British ArmyHis paintings often portray a love of home life and many of his still life works engender an air of calm and tranquility he clearly enjoyed in his life at Charleston.

Max Fisher, Head of Modern Art & Design said:

“Duncan Grant’s works are a perennial favourite and lot 193, “The Blue Cup” created much interest selling considerably over it’s estimate at £28,000.”

Lot 130, “Man on the Beach” by Italian artist, Domenico Gnoli, (1933 -1970) , achieved the highest bid of the sale with international interest.

Gnoli, sadly died young at just 36 and as such, it is rare to have original works available, with many now held in private collections in Italy.  The estimate for this piece was £15,000 to £25,000 but with several phone lines booked, the piece finally sold for £42,000.

The highlights continued into day two of the sale for the design lots.   A tall asymmetric vase, by renowned ceramicist Jennifer Lee, sold for £8,000 and a very unusual large, walnut sculpture which spanned nearly a metre wide, by Romanian artist, Ovidiu Maitec ( 1925-2007) reached £11,000.

The final sale total reached just under £445,000.  The next Modern Art & Design sale is on Wednesday 4 & 5 December 2024.  If you are interested in consigning your modern art or studio ceramics or design, please contact Max Fisher,
