The House & Garden Sale Review

The  Abingdon House & Garden sale is one of the most anticipated sales in the Mallams calendar, and the 14th and 15th of March sale offered over 600 lots of fine furniture, garden ornaments and sculpture.

The first 267 lots of the sale came from a private collection of fine English furniture and chattels removed from a Cotswold Manor. Strong pre-sale interest as well as bidding from dealers and private buyers pushed prices on the day far exceeded expectation. The result showing that there is still a strong demand for good quality English and Continental antique furniture.

Selected results from the collection are pictured:

1. lot 33- A William and Mary marquetry chest of drawers sold for £13,000
2. Lot 171- A Pair of George III pine housekeepers cupboards sold for £8,200
3. Lot 69- A George I green lacquered kneehole desk sold for £6,200
4. Day two of the sale saw garden ornaments, sculpture and architectural elements all go under the hammer. The top price for the day was £27,000 for group of  mosaic panels, believed to be early the group far exceeded the pre-sale estimate of £500-700.
5. The sale also included a collection of contemporary garden sculpture and models. This gannet by modern artist David Cooke making £1,000.
